It is such a wonderful time to be alive

The digital landscape is always changing and how it impacts our daily lives, and it keeps growing. 3D interactive models are influencing many industries and how we do things, however it can appear to be a magic box that only a select few can enter.

I am here to say it’s more accessible than ever.

I am an Immersive Designer who is passionate about finding the right solution to help people with real time technologies. Guiding you through the process of how 3D assets, interactive content and technology can be used meet a desired outcome. Then by drawing from my diverse portfolio of experience to turn your solution into a reality.

How I Got Here

I was that kid who, the moment I got my hands on a computer, dove headfirst into making things. I explored 3D models, games, and all sorts of creative digital experiments. I didn’t just play games. I wanted to understand how they were made.

What set my path in motion was witnessing a workplace accident. I remember thinking, could a game have prevented this? At the time, OHS training was all still Death by PowerPoint and paper tests, uninspiring and forgettable.

I realised that if someone could practise the same task in a safe digital space, where they could fail without consequence and learn by doing, it would have far more impact than a slideshow ever could.

That idea pushed me to move across Australia to study and work as a game designer and developer, using Unity 3D and C#. But I quickly realised that this was only one piece of the broader skill set I needed.

I moved into architectural visualisation using 3ds Max, and later transitioned into real-time visualisation in the engineering sector. This shift gave me the chance to work with a wide range of clients and projects, developing creative solutions using virtual and augmented reality. It was here that I learned how powerful immersive tools can be for helping stakeholders and communities explore and understand complex designs together.

Today, I work in the education sector. I consult with academics and develop interactive 3D content to improve student learning outcomes. Whether it’s through VR headsets, Hololens, or WebGL, I create experiences that support students wherever they are, whether in a lab, classroom, or remote rural Australia.

Despite the advances in this field, immersive technology still feels like a black box to many. It can be intimidating and difficult to break into. That’s why I created a series of YouTube channels focused on sound, 3D, and immersive technology. My goal is to demystify the process and support others in their journey into this space.

In many ways, I have come full circle, using immersive technology to help people better understand the world around them. But the journey is far from over. I am always looking ahead, excited to explore what comes next and how new tools can be used to improve people’s lives.

Looking To The Horizon

Overall, I am eager to get into the new decade. With how accessible 3D asset creation is and consumer grade technology able to show some impressive experience. I can see real time interactive content playing a part in our daily lives.

Geo-Spatial Shared Interactive Experiences Will Change How We Live

With the recent details about the Metaverse, we are seeing glimpses of how the digital and physical world can interact with each other. Creating hybrid spaces have the potential to greatly enhance people's lives by seamlessly merging the best parts of 3D interaction with the physical surroundings. Within these spaces, digital campfires provide small, shared points of connection. This will impact a variety of industries over the coming decades.

Capturing Reality To Blend With The Digital World

One of my past times has been photography. It stemmed from just getting a pretty picture, however there is so much more I do with the camera. I am a known sucker for interesting textures on a cloudy day. In the context of 3D and immersive content creation, cameras are gateways into asset creation. Creating 3D content requires a lot of reference and understanding of reality. Being able to get on site to capture Photogrammetry, metcaps, photos and videos with the project in mind saves time and resources.

Sound Is A Powerful Tool For Guiding A User Through An Experience

My other passion involves music and music making machines. I love synthesizers and a chilled afternoon is a freshly brewed coffee and switching them on for a lengthy jam session. These machines has also made it into my work as they bring an unique element to sound design. I have learnt a few tricks over the year so I have a YouTube channel with a wonderful community around synthesizers and how to use them. If you are a synth fan, definitely pop on by.

Immersive Technologies for Regional and Remote Learning

One of my core research interests is using immersive technologies to support learning in regional and remote Australia by decentralising skill acquisition. I am beginning discussions around post graduation research to better understand the needs of staff, academics and learners in decentralised education, drawing on entangled pedagogy to explore how immersive technologies can support learning without adding unnecessary complexity. This is why I treat my blog as a space for ongoing scholarship and reflective practice.
